An exotic honeymoon in Rwanda nearly came to a tragic end when Gemma Cosgriff, 29, from Melbourne was rushed by a 300kg gorilla who shoved her to the ground.

Observing the animals in their natural habitat, Gemma and her husband Damian were advised to act submissive and avoid eye contact. That didn’t stop the massive gorilla – who zeroed in on Gemma, thumps his chest and heads toward her before pushing her into the long grass.

Gemma thinks it may have been her pink shirt that caught the attention of the wild silverback. While it looks dramatic, she came away uninjured and said the encounter didn’t actually hurt her.

There are only 800 mountain gorillas left in the world and are found in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
