As Time reports, the infant was found in a plastic bag alive outside a home in update New York on Tuesday.
The baby’s mother, 17-year-old Pennsylvania woman Harriette Hoyt, has been charged with attempted murder.
Court documents allege that Ms Hoyt left the young child in the backyard of a home near some bushes.
“My sister came out off the porch and went to the side to the backyard of my neighbour’s house with a stick, thinking it was a dog,” local resident Karen Seals told WENY.
“Her legs were just dangling in the bag, her head was in the bag, her whole head was covered all the way down,” Karen’s sister, Kayla, added.
The baby was found dirty and dehydrated and was taken to hospital. The infant is now in a stable condition.
Elmira police Sgt. William Solt said the sisters were “truly heroes in this incident”.
