cooking tips
freeze onions 30 minutes before you need to cut them as freezing them freezes the juice and stops it from getting in your eyes and making you cry

I pay $15 every pay day towards the electricity bill. With the company I'm with there aren't any rewards for this but with some there are. It is a great feeling when you get an electricity bill with only double digits!

Sick of my partners solvol soap leaving tough dirty marks on the counter, and not having room for a soap dish along with everything else. Rest the soap on a rectangular nail file. It keeps the sink clean and now he has no reason not to clean up those nails whilst he's at it.

for a cough or cold I boil cloves. 30 cloves to 2 cups of water, then boil it down to one cup of water. This is a great drink to have to boost the immune system and can still be drunk while on most pretty much all medicines. Cloves are said to be natures antibiotic. If the taste is too harsh and teaspoon of honey helps and is also great for you.

How often do you dust the top of your fridge or freezer? I put glad wrap on top of my fridge and freezer so when i dust it, i just peel off the glad wrap and place more, Easy!

my partner and i keep all our 5 cent pieces and place them in glass bottles such as pink cowgirl. . . they really do add up and you dont even notice that they are there until you really need them . . we have saved up to $150 n are still saving. so if you have trouble saving like we do its a great way to save and not miss the money put in the bottles

I collect cheap toys and books from charity shops and school fetes and put them into plastic baskets. When the grandchildren visit there is plenty to keep them occupied.

We used to have electric blankets on our beds but with the high cost of electricity we have discarded them and reverted to putting a couple of hot water bottles in the bed which does the job just as well.Maybe some of the old ways are better.

im a shopaholic and i used to spend so much money on new clothes, shoes and accessories but now i go looking around op shops, ive saved so much money, you never know what you might find and some clothes that cost next to nothing still have tags on.

Just as Isabeau pays $15 every pay day on her electricity bill
I pay $50.00 every fortnight on my land rates. It's great not having to find that sort of money every quarter.I know not everyone can afford that amount but whatever you can do certainly helps.

If you have little ones about the house who like to get into your kitchen/bathroom/laundry cupboards, simply grab some spare detachable bra straps, and loop them around the handles on the cupboard doors! To "secure" them in place, just slot the hook over the strap itself :) Very effective, and much cheaper than having to go and buy yourself locks and fasteners :)

When I buy anything like a washing machine, a camera - I would always barter e.g what is the best price you can sell to me? I would ask the sale consultant. And sure enough, I would always get a much lower price than the original sale price. Fpr instance, there was a good camera that was on sale for the price of $ 479, after bargaining - I purchased the camera for the price of $398, that was a saving of $ 71. So it does not hurt to barter.

When theres leftover meat from bbqs or roast dinners, I cut it up into nice bit size squares, cook up some brown rice, mix it all together with gravy and freeze it. Its a nice treat for my dogs dinner throughout the week.

If you are in need of new costume jewellery, collect any old jewellery or beads that you no longer want and then rethread the beads, etc, to make a unique piece for you to wear or give as a gift.

Coughs are very annoying for little one's, I have always peeled an onion then slice it up place on a small plate and put it it the bedroom near the bed, coughing will decrease in a very short time , if they also have sore throat follow as above but this time pour honey over the onion, let sit for a few hours strain off the liquid and give a teaspoon of liquid as required, It works every time.

Posted by viviene from WA on 19/06/2010 11:43:16 AM

my boyfriend is a spear fisherman and when I came into the kitchen last night he was chutting the onions wearing his diving mask. it was very funny but also a very clever idea, this could work with swimming goggles too which most people have around the house.

Make some extra cash by having a garage sale and sell all the stuff you have not used for a long time e g, kitchen utensils, kids toys & games, DVD`s, Videos, records, clothes you will be surprised how much you will make get every one involved in the family let them have a commission for helping with the store. It is a good days work have a free stuff table to get your buyers in you can sell anything your no longer using you will be surprised at how much stuff you have. Defiantly someone else`s treasure for a fraction of the cost and i bet the kids have only used something once as we know how quickly they move on to something new.

i was sick and tired of the green moss that the winter gew left on my cement at the front and found that common pool chlorine diluted with water and a little elbow grease with an old broom did the trick. now the cement looks good as new and back to prime condition

just wanted to say that when you need to clean your shoes, wipe tables, cubpboards, almost anything really....i can always turn to a baby wipe. Works first time everytim.

Posted by Tanya from NSW on 25/06/2010 1:18:13 PM

Response to Tanya from NSW RE baby wipes.....I too use them. Especially whilst ravellins as they are lighter than water in a caravan. I even wipe my floor with them!

We use vaseline mixed with tea tree oil instead of vix and other rubs. Much cheaper and you can never really run out :)

To save money on heating we have a really long open house and it's almost impossible to keep warm. We wear thicker jumpers and clothes, slippers and warm socks. Works just as well. We also use electric blankets but by using a really thick warm blanket under the doona it traps in the heat so we can keep them on a low setting or turn them off once it's warm

Starting a vegetable patch is a great way to involve the kids in developing healthy eating skills as well as saving money on seasonal produce. We also use what we dont use to trade with our neighbours to give extra variety.
