Potty pet problems

Joanne Bickerton, 34, from Maldon, Vic owns Lily, a fox terrier who refuses to pee outside when it rains.

Joanne asks:

Lily is four years old and sleeps with us in our bed. She uses her doggy door during the day but refuses to use it at night or if it's raining. Even when we take her out at midnight we still find poo or wee in the hallway. Why is this happening?

The Pet Whisperer says:

Some dogs refuse to use their doggy door at night and when it's raining as they don't like to get cold or wet. Why go outside to the toilet when you can stay inside and keep warm and dry? Work with Lily to build a positive association with the doggy door. Use treats to reward her for using it, especially at night or when it's raining.

Thoroughly clean the hallway with an odour neutraliser, available at pet-supply shops. Unlike normal household cleaners, these are specifically designed to remove every trace of odour that remains after an 'accident'. Dogs are attracted to areas where they can still smell urine, making them more likely to toilet there.

Finally, try feeding Lily her meal in the morning. This will make her less likely to relieve herself in the middle of the night. Limit her access to water by replacing her bowl of water with a few ice blocks several hours before bedtime.

My poodle Shziztu cross dog who is 2yrs 6mnths old is slowly getting better but I had a problem with her wetting our bed and my daughters bed even when she had access to outdoors.I try to keep my daughters door shut now and she hasn't weed our bed for about 3mths now. I think she just hasn't matured yet.I still leave newspaper and pet pads in strategic places around the house and she sometimes uses them.mostly when the weather is wet.I take her for a good walk last thing at night so she doesn't need to tiolet in the wee small hours now.She is learning to hold it till about 7 am
