Actually, I shouldn't say one item, because I have one in every style you can imagine! No matter what look I'm going for, a white top gives me a perfect blank canvas. Whether it's paired with dark denim or a paisley printed skirt for a hippy feel, you can't go wrong. And the best part? White suits everyone. Here are some styles of white shirt you can't beat...
Long singlet...
Many white tops can be sheer or see-through, so I like to wear an extra long white singlet underneath. Choose one with thick straps to cover your bra, and you can pull it down to cover your belly and the top of your jeans. It also makes me feel more comfortable – if my top rides up, I've got an extra layer underneath.
Round-neck T-shirt...
This will cover every casual occasion and looks great with shorts and cargo pants in brown, khaki or black. Or pop it on with a denim skirt and thongs for a breezy lunch. Bring in colour with accessories and in cooler weather, you can layer a long-sleeved top underneath. Look for T-shirts in thick, stretch material, as light cotton can get threadbare and stretch out of shape after a few washes.
Long tunic top...
This is my go-to shirt for a classy, yet comfortable look. The crisp white is great against denim, lending more sophistication than a T-shirt. The long length covers hips and tummies and three-quarter or long sleeves mean arms aren't an issue either. I like details such as embroidery around the collar or sleeves, some subtle frills or an embossed flower pattern. This gives the simple white top a pretty, interesting twist.
