Succeeding in reality TV

Think you've got what it takes to make it in reality TV? Check out these four tips to see if you've covered all bases.

Personality over beauty

The business of television often relies on good looks to get past the audition stages, but that's not the thing that'll get you to the end. A strong and engaging personality will always get a contestant further than just a pretty face. Highlight the part of your personality that you think defines you and build on it. Bonus points if you're quite the looker with a great personality to boot.

Getting along with others

Watching someone interact with other people always proves to be entertaining, whether they're flirting or playing the strategy. If you're confident and charismatic without being too overbearing, then you're more likely to be cast. Just because you're not a stealing beauty, doesn't mean you don't have a chance. Casting directors are always looking to keep a cast vibrant with diversity.

Being genuine

Reality TV stars often succeed based on a personality or a life story that viewers can relate to. If you spend too much time making up parts of your life, chances are this will come through television screens and casting directors and viewers will see right through it. While production editing almost always mean that scenes are taken out of context, this doesn't always mean the worst parts of yourself will be on display. Most reality TV shows only go for an hour and so only the most entertaining parts tend to make it on screen while the less dramatic scenes are left on the cutting room floor.

Determination

Casting calls for reality television candidates are much more widely advertised that your average acting or presenting role and this makes it easier for the everyday person to steer their way to success. Attend every casting call that you think you'd be able to do and persevere. The more you go to, the easier it becomes to realise what you want and what works - both for you and the casting directors involved and the show in question.
