After a long break, it's hard to get back into the school routine, so use this last week before school to help little minds adjust. Start by reminding your kids of the date they return to school, and set up a countdown calendar so they know when to expect it. For older kids, try to insist on earlier nights and mornings. This will help to reset body clocks that have been used to lazy sleep-ins.
If you haven't done so already, now is the time to check school uniforms. Make sure garments aren't missing buttons or in need of mending, and check they still fit! Also make sure backpacks are in order, with all the straps in good condition so they can be carried comfortably.
A big family calendar, with room for everyone's individual activities, will help you stay organised. You can buy one or make one yourself. Tie a pen or pencil to a piece of string right next to it so there's no excuse not to write in it.
For younger kids, write a list of your home, work and mobile numbers, along with those of other adults they can call if they can't contact you. Have your kids keep it in their backpacks. Include a few gold coins for phone calls or public transport.
IF YOU DO JUST ONE THING
Talk to your child about the coming year and let them know you'll always be there to help them with any challenges that lie ahead.
